A Letter to my Daddy

While I was growing up, my dad and I didn't have the best relationship. We didn't always get along, and although we loved each other, I don't think we liked each as much as we should have. Thankfully that all changed when my dad was laid off and I was home on winter break from college; at age 20 I became a Daddy's Girl.

In honor of Father's Day tomorrow, I'm writing my Daddy a letter:

Dear Daddy,

Thank you for always working hard to provide for our family, for making sure we always had food on the table and a roof over our heads. I know it always has been hard, but you always sacrificed what you wanted for what we needed. You have taught me to always work hard, even when it gets uncomfortable.

Thank you for being the best Poppa to my children. I know it's hard for you and them that we can't see you as often as we'd like and you can't come to all their special events, but we know you would if you could. They adore you, and I know the feeling is mutual.

Thank you for always knowing what to do to make me laugh; no one can make me laugh the way you do. Thank you for always knowing what to do to make my headaches go away; your forehead massages work faster and longer than any medicine. Your belly rubs when I was pregnant with the boys calmed them down more than anything; I'm sorry for always shoving my belly at you before giving you hugs or saying hi, but sometimes a tired momma's gotta do what she's gotta do to get some relief.

Thank you for walking me down the aisle when Pete and I got married, and for dancing with me. It was a joy and a privilege to have you there with me on my special day. I can't listen to Butterfly Kisses without tearing up and missing you.

Thank you for being in the delivery room with me when Paige was born. I know it wasn't exactly what we had planned for the day, but having you and mom there made it easier for me to make it through the day without going insane. Life sure is unpredictable, huh?

Thank you for my nick names; you give the best ones. My favorite for a long time was Duracell (cause I'm the copper top!), but I think the best one ever is Pond. I promise to never wear skirts as short as Amy, but I can't promise to not be as spunky!

Thank you for putting up with me and my crazy life every Thursday morning when I call. I know your days off are precious, and I'm so grateful that you always carve time out of your schedule to talk to me. They truly are a highlight of my week.

Thank you for loving me, no matter how stupid I've been or how crazy I may be. Your unconditional love helps me understand God's love for me. I couldn't have asked for a better earthly father. God knew what he was doing when he gave me you, and I thank him for you every day.

Love you always,
Your baby girl

Happy Father's day to all the dads out there!

  2. There there Pond,
You give me much more credit than I could possibly deserve. This is much more a testament of God's Grace than anything else. Your letter is quite obviously the sweetest most special father's day gift ever.
    Love Always,
    Dad (Poppa)
